CHAPTER 1 : Bob the Gardener

Despite Rachel’s resistance, Steven stormed out of the main door of his house and started walking towards Bob’s cabin with fast paced steps and a fuming anger. Though Russo came with him till the door, he stayed inside house and kept barking as if telling Steven to stop.

“Steven, don’t go. Please!” Rachel yelled coming out behind him.

Steven looked at the picture and he was certain that the young boy in the photograph behind Henry Williamson was none other than Bob. “I need to show this to him.” he said to Rachel knowing that she is coming after him.

Russo kept barking at Steven, Rachel and something invisible outside and saw his owners going into the trees.

“Bob!” Steven yelled approaching the old man’s cabin, “Come out!”

“Steve! Don’t yell.” Rachel tried to remind him that he needed to be calm to talk to someone. Especially someone who is as old as Bob.

After a few more yells, Bob slowly came out, looking confused and irritated. Steven did not wait to even greet or listen to Bob.

“Bob! Why are you in a picture with Henry Williamson?” he showed the picture to Bob who squinted his eyes looking at the photograph that was about 5 feet away from him. Steven waited for him to take a good look at it, “Don’t tell me its not you. I can recognize you with that mark on your forehead.”

Bob looked at the photograph with his skewed eyes and then quietly went back inside without saying a word.

Steven and Rachel felt both flustered and offended at Bob’s rude gesture, “What an asshole!” Steven said to Rachel.

But then Steven decided to storm the cabin. He was not going away without getting any answers. But as he walked towards the cabin, Bob came back, this time wearing his thick glasses, “I can’t see very well.” Bob explained himself taking the photograph from a surprised Steven’s hand.

Bob looked at the photograph and the lines on his face strained together tightly as he saw Williamson in the centre, but then he looked into the corner those strained lines relaxed. “Yes, that is me.” Bob confirmed.

“I know that. But what are you doing behind Henry Williamson? You knew him?” Steven asked. By now he had lost much of his temper.

Bob handed the photograph back to Steven, “Yes, I was his gardener. I have lived here since Henry Williamson first came to live in that house of yours.”

“You never said anything about it.” Rachel chipped in from behind.

“We just talked once. You asked me for coffee and I said now. You didn’t ask, I didn’t tell. That was all.” there was a sound argument in Bob’s voice that was neither impolite nor angry.

“Listen! There is something in that house that is attacking my wife.” Steven told Bob walking towards him with his hands raised. He wanted to know if Bob knew anything about his dead master’s ghost roaming around the estate.

“He rarely came outside of that house.” Bob said, “I have never seen him after his death.”

“Sir!” Rachel said politely, “We are in trouble. Please tell us anything you know about his ghost.” She was pleading to the old man. Bob saw Rachel’s teary eyes and they fixed him in his spot for a second. But soon he recovered from the overwhelming emotion of a stranger woman, “Sorry lady. I cant tell you nothing about any ghost.” he said coldly.

Understanding that Bob is not going to cooperate, Rachel threw her head around in helplessness and turned back. As she started walking towards the house, Steven tried to stop her, “Rach! Stop, dont go in there alone. Wait for me.”

Steven ran behind Rachel but then remembered about Bob. He turned back to the old man and his face was red with anger, “You are going to regret this old man. I am going to make you regret it.” he said on top of his voice before running back behind Rachel.

Rachel quickly walked back to the door and went inside. Following him, Steven was several feet away from her, “Rach, I am coming.”

Just as he was about to reach the steps to the main door, Steven could feel a cold breeze of air behind him. The first thing he saw was Russo who was sitting by the door, jumping on his feet like a spring toy. Just when Steven heard Russo bark at something behind him, his legs were pulled from behind. Crashing on the ground, Steven could feel a tight grip on his ankles. He looked at his attacker, but could not see anything or anyone. But then his eyes focused and he saw a translucent shadow hovering over him. The next thing Steven knew was that he was being dragged away from his home.

“Rachel!” Steven yelled while being dragged away. He tried to kick the shadow, but his invisible attacker was too strong for him. In a feeble hope to get some help, Steven looked back at his home and saw Russo barking madly at the invisible shadow.

“Russo! Boy, get Mommy! Help me.” Steven yelled in desperation.

Russo did not go inside or call Rachel, instead that dog gathered all his courage and jumped on the ground. Steven could see that Russo was fighting his fear only to help him.

The barking grew louder and Steve could see Russo approaching him. Jumping over him, Russo pounced at the shadow with an open jaw. The shadow suddenly disappeared and Russo met nothing but air during his jump. Steven could feel that the grip on his ankles had faded away but he was still lying on the ground due to the shock. Russo again came to help his master and started licking his face. Steven
felt the love and encouragement of the dog who just faced his fear to save him. “Oh boy!” he said hugging him from the ground.

“Steve! What happened?” Rachel was at the door.

Steven quickly got back on his feet and without wasting any time he ran back to the house, making sure that Russo was with him.

“Rach, get back in the house. Quick!” Steven ran with all the force he had in his body and seconds later the whole family was inside.

“Fuck!” Steven said, falling back on the locked door behind him. Russo jumped at him with his paws and whimpering. Rachel could see the horror on Steven and Russo’s faces, but did not ask as Steven was still trying to breath. Getting blood back to his head, he said to his wife between his heavy breath:

“We need to get some help.”

  CHAPTER 2 : They Don’t Trouble Anybody

Steven was pouring salt on the floor crating a boundary around Rachel. This area marked by the salt line was quite big enough. Inside they have gathered several things they though were necessary like a makeshift bed made with a mattress, sheet and two pillows, some water, a few things to eat and Steven’s work laptop.

While Steven completed the boundary with the salt making sure that there was no gap anywhere, he crossed the salt line and got inside the ‘safe area’.

“Did you find anything?” he asked putting the bag of salt away.

“Here, take a look at this website.” Rachel handed Steven the laptop. Steven saw a website opened up on his laptop. “Nathan Parker.. paranormal expert .. adventurist..” he read from the webpage’s title, “What is this guy? Indiana Jones mixed with John Constantine?”

“Just look at what people are saying about him.” Rachel shifted Steven’s attention to the many testimonials written on the webpage. Together, Rachel and Steven went through each and every testimonial that felt genuine, emotional and impressive for Nathan’s ability to help them. “Should we call him?” Rachel asked reluctantly.

“Do it. I don’t think we have another chimney that would fall over this guy.” Steven said looking at Nathan’s picture — a handsome man of mid thirties with blonde hair, athletic physique and a shining smile.

  —————

The next afternoon, Nathan Parker was standing at the door with his big white smile, “You are the Masters?” he confirmed, “I am Nathan Parker.. paranormal expert!”

Rachel shook his hand first inviting him inside. Suddenly seeing Nathan made her feel a little secure and so she was not feeling the rush to back inside their safe area of salt.

Nathan looked around the hall and saw the safe area, “Hmm.. salt! Smart thinking.” he complimented the couple, “How did you know about it?”

“We read it on the internet.” Rachel said fixing her hair in nervousness. She felt like answering a question in the science class, “it was on a website that said that salt keeps ghosts away, and so making a safe area was a wise thing to do.”

“Brilliant!” Nathan said looking at the salt, “But did they tell you that there are exceptions of this rule?”

Steven and Rachel had no idea that salt was not foolproof. Nathan could read the sudden fright on their faces and so tried to make them feel safe again, “It happens in rare cases. Dont worry. But there have been some incidents where the salt didnt stop the spirit.”

“Mr Parker!” Steven thought it was time to come to the point, “As you might have realized by now, we have a problem.”

“Old house in a lonely countryside!” Nathan exclaimed as if calling out a cliche, “textbook stuff, really!”

Steven and Rachel stared at him with blank faces.

“But this is a lovely home.” Nathan said with genuine appreciation.

“Thank you, but we need help to get this house clean.” Steven said.

“Alright, tell me about it?” Nathan asked taking out his small leather bound journal from his pocket. Rachel felt like talking to a contractor who was here to take care of the termites.

“Well this guy who owned this house before us..” Steven picked up Henry’s photograph and showed it to Nathan, “Henry Williamson! My wife says she sees him trying to ..” Steven felt a little awkward, “well grope her.”

“Ahh! A perverted ghost!” Nathan exclaimed looking at Henry’s photograph.

“But yesterday, even I was attacked, outside the house.” Steven finished his explanation.

Nathan looked at the photograph carefully, “So this ghost roams freely around this whole estate?”

“I guess. He used to own it.” Rachel chipped in, and then pointed Nathan to her discovery in the photograph, “And yeah.. here!” she placed her finger over Bob in the photograph, “This guy.. was Henry’s gardener and he still lives here.”

“Wow!” Nathan was pleasantly surprised, “Did you guys talk to him?”

“Yes, but he is a lost cause. He just doesn’t want to talk, you know generally.” Steven informed Nathan about their problem with Bob. Rachel tried to explain it properly, “What Steven means is that Bob is not a fan of talking to regular people.”

“Well!” Nathan said looking away from the photograph with a smile, “I am no regular people. Take me to him.”

  —————

“Bob? Hey Bob!” Steven called for the old man standing with Rachel and Nathan outside the cabin. After a few calls, Bob came out slowly. He looked at the new face that stood with Rachel and Steven, “What is it now?” he said in a dull and unpleasant tone.

“Bob, this is Nathan, a friend of ours who would like to talk to you about Henry Williamson.” Rachel said being as polite as she could.

Bob took a good look at Nathan squinting his eyes, just the way he did while trying to look at the photograph. “Hell Bob!” Nathan said with a friendly smile and an offer to shake the old man’s hand, “How are you doing?”

“I don’t like visitors much.” Bob made himself clear.

“Great! No fan of small talk.” Nathan smiled, “Just like me. So Bob, what can you tell me about Henry Williamson?”

“He was a scoundrel!” Bob said with a disgusted face.

“Thats a good start,” Nathan pried for more, “But I am looking for more details, like — What he liked? Was he attached to something? Or.. Why would he lust after young and beautiful women after being dead for several years?”

“Women didn’t like him. He had ugly teeth. Rotten ones.” Bob answered. Steven and Rachel were surprised to see Bob answering questions to this stranger, “He really liked his dog though.”

“Dog?” Nathan asked. — “Yeah! Bootstrap was his name. He was a good boy.” Bob replied.

“So Henry, are you aware of Henry’s ghost? Do the ghosts bother you?” Nathan asked putting his journal down. Bob thought for a moment and then replied, “Yes I know. I have been living here for many many years. But take my word they don’t trouble anybody unless somebody provokes them.” Bob said staring at Steven and Rachel.

“That ghost attacked me and my wife!” Steven got angry at Bob’s insinuations.

“I have been living here for many many years, and none of the ghosts bothered me. That is because I stay in my boundary and do not overstep.” Bob yelled back, though in a milder tone. Nathan could see that the old man was getting agitated and so he tried to calm things down.

“Hey relax Bob! We are not here to fight. Thank you for your help.” he said in a friendly tone, “We will talk to you later, okay?”

Bob walked back inside his cabin and the trio started going back to the house.

“Did you hear what he said?” Nathan asked Steven and Rachel.

“Yeah! the old man accused us for our troubles!” Steven said, still angry.

“No!” Nathan stopped and looked at Steven, “You should listen more carefully to what people say. He said ‘they dont trouble anybody’. You have got more than one ghost my friend.”

Steven and Rachel froze with shock as Nathan turned around lost in his thoughts, walking back to the house. He was unaffected with the new o
r any revelation, “Come now. We need to take care of these ghosts!”

“You will be safe here?” Rachel asked Nathan as he prepared his bed on the floor in the main hall. It contained of a carpet he brought with himself.

“I will be fine, thank you. This is my safe area.” Nathan replied politely.

“Well, let us know if you need anything.” Rachel said before joining Steven back in their bed inside the safe area? Something caught Nathan’s attention outside the window and so he clearly moved towards it after turning off the light. In the light of the moon outside, he could see Bob standing by the trees, “What are you doing here Bob?” Nathan asked himself and kept looking at him. Bob stood there like one of the trees without moving or doing anything. After watching him for several minutes, holding his breath, Nathan got tired, “I am going to sleep, Bob.” he said and went back to his bed.

As Nathan moved away from the window, a woman dressed in a white gown appeared before Bob. A warm smile appeared on Bob’s face.

CHAPTER 3 : Not One, But Two Ghosts

It was raining the next day and Nathan was sitting with Rachel and Steven in the main hall of the house. He had his journal in his hands. The couple were feeling a little relieved just with Nathan’s presence in their house.

“So we know that Henry is after Rachel. That is our spirit number one.” Nathan made a big dot in a square on his journal. The square represented the house, “And you, my friend got attacked by a spirit that looked nothing like Henry outside.” Nathan made another dot outside the square, “we will call that spirit number two!”

Nathan got lost in his own diagram, “Hmmm! This is interesting. Rachel?” he looked at her, “Did you feel any danger outside the house?”

“No. Not that I remember any.” Rachel said remembering hard.

“So, it is safe to say that HENRY..” Nathan called the name aloud looking at the ceiling and walls, “does not leave the house.” he looked back at the couple with a smile, “And this spirit number two does not come inside the house. Wow! These two have divided their territory pretty well.”
